The potatoes that I purchased earlier in the year had developed well and had a number of good sprits on them. I had purchased 3 varieties to put in at the allotment and had been given one by a friend. I planted 2 rows of maincrops – ‘Cara’ and ‘Amour’ and 3 rows of 1st earlies – ‘Ulster Septre’ and ‘Shervine’.

For each row a trench was dug out and added to it was a handful of blood, fish and bone and then some well-rotted manure.
