As of today I still haven’t cut a spike from my gladioli beds! It seems that everyone is having the same problem with the season being late. However,  looking around there are flowers just on the horizon.

I have been staking the spikes now for a while to try and keep them straight. Most seem to be behaving, but ‘Socrates’ is being true to form and shapes itself like a boomerang even if you catch it just coming out of the leaves!

Careless showing colour
A close up of one of the ‘Careless’ spikes. 21 buds which isn’t too bad for the variety.

Down at the allotment the story is the same although the prime are coming thick and fast. There should be an open floret any day. I wait with bated breath…
